Outdoor canopy space for MAME Shiba Cafe by Kin Neko
This project presented a creative combination of functionality and aesthetics. The outdoor canopy was designed to reduce direct sunlight while creating a visual effect reminiscent of surreal floating clouds. Using translucent PVC, the material was heat-welded into sealed spheres and inflated into carefully calculated forms. These spheres were then connected to form a very lightweight canopy system. The supporting structure was assembled from slender steel bars, interwoven to create a delicate yet stable frame. The overall spatial experience was dynamic, with light and color changing with context and throughout the day. Because the material could transmit light, the canopy appeared soft and luminous at night when illuminated.
The translucent PVC not only reduced heat and blocked direct sunlight but also created a sense of openness and spatial expansion. The canopy provided a gentle contrast to the rigid steel frame while maintaining a cool, comfortable environment beneath. This structure ensured functional durability while also serving as an aesthetic highlight in the café area, creating a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere for visitors.
