Weaving is about connection. Gathering is the moment when guests come together within a particular space, time, and place. The brief was to create a semi-open yet sufficiently intimate setting for the MÊ VỊ Banquet, centered around a long table for 32 guests. The dinner unfolded like a sequence of chapters recalling memories of the Vietnamese Tết, orchestrated by talented chefs, where cuisine was experienced in a slow, refined, and immersive rhythm. The spatial idea emerged almost simultaneously with the first sketches, a soft, continuous line suggesting the image of a river, while also connecting three functional zones: the stage and main kitchen, the secondary kitchen, and the dining area. The form and height of the enclosing wall were adjusted according to the spatial volume and the need to control views. Within the ensemble of eight pavilions of the festival, the space was positioned at a moderate scale sufficiently separated to host the banquet, yet still resonating with the broader context. Construction took place within only eight hours overnight. The structure was therefore simplified to the maximum, using ribbed steel bars Ø12 arranged in 6-meter modules, allowing them to be bent and adjusted directly on site, minimizing fabrication and saving time. Although the commission arrived quite suddenly, the process from concept to construction unfolded quickly and seamlessly. The inspiration seemed to have already existed beforehand, drawn from the familiar image of the Saigon River that often appeared in LAM’s designs.
