Trà Nguyễn’s mini play, a performance debuting alongside the introduction of the Push the Floor Project.
The installation space for Trà Nguyễn’s mini play is a dreamy, expansive setting, using primarily white mesh fabric to create layers of space that feel soft and fluid. The mesh fabric is suspended from above, spreading across the floor, forming light, floating white sheets that evoke a sense of airiness and delicacy. The fabric is also adorned with small, colorful elements, adding a contrasting visual punch against the white background, enhancing the liveliness and dynamic visual impact.
This scene is not just a traditional stage but an interactive space where the audience can feel the connection between humans and their surrounding environment through the installation. The flowing fabric lines evoke a sense of openness, where everything seems to be floating, creating a flexible and emotionally rich performance space.
“Through conversations with the playwright and director, and exploring the script and the intended theatrical qualities, LAM was truly impressed by the way the author approaches ‘non-traditional’ theater. The current state of the venue has a distinctive architecture. The space and materials evoke a familiar atmosphere, yet the structure is handled in a creative, contemporary, and bold manner. The existing architecture also plays a role in influencing LAM’s design approach, material selection, and construction methods.
The material used is a light-colored, hollow mesh, layered like floating clouds, stretching from the floor and clinging to the wall structures. The boundary of the floor is deliberately layered with multiple layers of mesh to blur this divide. The audience feels as though they are ‘immersed’ in a cloud, like ‘compass points’ trapped in a net trying to find a way out. The audience, too, feels ‘trapped’ within it.”
