LAM once had the opportunity to visit the Cham Brocade Weaving Village – Phan Rang – Thap Cham, and was very impressed with the manual weaving process here. The loom, materials, stretching the vertical thread on the loom, the heavy weight hanging the thread… create horizontal and vertical layers of techniques in an artistic way. The craftsmen’s hands are nimble, without unnecessary movements, they are very free on their familiar tools. The brocade fabric panels full of patterns are formed from the arrangement of those separate colored threads. The loom and the artisan create the atmosphere and movement of this weaving space that really attracts LAM. An artistic feature from the traditional weaving technique of the Cham people! From that inspiration for brocade weaving, LAM wanted to make this artwork as a recreation of the space of the loom enlarged. Viewers can experience the space being ‘woven’ from large, multi-colored material threads. These materials are reused from events that have taken place that LAM has collected and stored. Large pieces of material are twisted and woven into rovings before being ‘woven’ onto the tension wire system.
