In this movable partition system, Lam Weaving Spaces collaborated with The Lab Saigon to create a piece inspired by the traditional Vietnamese rice paper. The main structure of the partition is crafted from steel frames and handwoven PVC plastic sheets, recreating the intricate interwoven pattern reminiscent of artisanal crafts. The subtlety in weaving the plastic material and the metallic frame structure not only honors tradition but also embodies modernity and adaptability in architectural spaces.

The PVC plastic material brings lightness while still being durable enough for long-term use and easy mobility. Combined with the steel frame, the partition becomes highly versatile, allowing it to be repositioned and reconfigured based on the spatial needs. The light reflecting through the woven plastic sheets creates a delicate contrast, giving the space a sense of openness and ethereality, reminiscent of the translucent appearance of rice paper drying in the sun. This partition beautifully merges tradition with modernity, showcasing a fresh approach to traditional materials while aligning with contemporary interior design trends.

“Bánh tráng (rice paper) is a traditional, convenient food of the Vietnamese people. Not only does the image of the rice paper evoke memories, but the process of making it can be tied to the childhoods of many. Almost every rural area or village has a rice paper oven to serve the community. There are many famous, distinctive rice paper villages known for their delicious products. When the rice paper is still warm, soft, and semi-opaque, the craftsman removes it from the mold and spreads it evenly on a bamboo or woven coconut leaf rack, where it adheres to the surface. The racks of rice paper are then laid out in the sun to dry. Once dry, the rice paper is peeled off and stacked in neat piles. In regions that specialize in rice paper production, you can see large, orderly drying yards that are quite impressive!

LAM created this partition for the space at Blank Lounge, drawing inspiration from the process and visual effects of making rice paper.”
