Rice Paper Partition

Rice Paper Partition

Designed: THE LAB SAIGON

Location: HO CHI MINH CITY. VIETNAM

LAM designed this partition for Blank Lounge space based on the inspiration and visual effect of the traditional Vietnamese rice paper-making process. The main structure of the partition consisted of a steel frame and hand-woven PVC strips, recreating an interlaced pattern with a strong visual character. The careful weaving of PVC and the structure of the metal frame not only referenced traditional craft but also expressed a contemporary approach suited to architectural interiors.

The PVC material in the partition system remained lightweight while being durable enough for movement and long-term use. Combined with the steel frame, it allowed the partition to remain flexible and be easily repositioned to meet the lounge’s spatial needs. Light reflected through the woven surfaces, creating subtle contrasts and a sense of openness and soft translucency that recalled the image of thin rice paper drying in the sunlight. The partition established a dialogue between tradition and modernity by reinterpreting familiar materials in a contemporary interior setting.
