Matte Matcha & Teabar – District 7
Observing the delicate white foam floating on a cup of vibrant green matcha – shimmering, smooth, yet quick to dissolve – this brief and pure moment inspired the canopy concept of the outdoor space at Matte Matcha & Teabar. The ceiling was made from a combination of translucent PVC panels, forming a flexible structure with a certain level of elasticity. This system allowed the panels to be shaped into different planes and volumes depending on aesthetic and functional needs. By adjusting the density, spacing, and geometry of the perforations across the material surface, natural light is intentionally filtered as it passes through the canopy, casting soft and shifting shadows that provide gentle shade for the outdoor area.
Matcha contains a high level of saponin, the compound that forms the characteristic foam when the tea is whisked with a chasen. For tea connoisseurs, the ability of matcha to produce a thick, fine foam is one of the key indicators of its quality and flavor. This quality is translated into the design language of the canopy: a light and airy structure with strong visual movement, evoking the image of matcha foam gradually dissolving into space.
